Poker Rules and Betting

Poker is a card game in which players bet on their individual card combinations. Poker players bet against one another and bets are placed in a central "pot." This pot is won by the player with the best poker hand. The winning poker hand is determined by a hierarchy of poker hand rankings (listed below). Whichever card combination is highest on the hierarchy is the winning hand.

There are many variations of poker, each with its own set of rules. Although there are many poker rule variations, they all follow a similar pattern of play and use the same hand ranking hierarchy. In general, an ace is the highest card and a two, or "deuce," is the lowest. A typical poker hand consists of five cards. The list of hand rankings below is a standard hierarchy that applies to nearly every poker variation. The hands are listed from the highest ranked hand at the top to the lowest ranked hand at the bottom.

Straight Flush - Five cards in sequence all of the same suit. (Example: K-Q-J-10-9 all of clubs) An ace-high straight flush (A-K-Q-J-10) is known as a royal flush, and it is the highest ranking hand in poker.

Four of a Kind - Four cards of the same rank and any other card of a different rank. (Example: 7-7-7-7-J)

Full House - Three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. (Example: 9-9-9-8-8)

Flush - Five cards all of the same suit, but not in rank or sequence. (Example: K-J-9-7-6 all of clubs)

Straight - Five cards in sequence, but not the same suit. (Example: K-Q-J-10-9)

Three of a Kind - Three cards of the same rank and any other cards of different ranks. (Example: 5-5-5-Q-9)

Two Pair - Two cards of the same rank, two cards of another rank, and any other unmatched card. (Example: J-J-8-8-5)

One Pair - Two cards of the same rank and any other unmatched cards. (Example: 6-6-K-10-5)

High Card - No cards are the same rank, the cards are not in sequence, and the cards are not all the same suit. The hand is determined by the highest card. (Example: A-10-9-5-3 is titled an "Ace-High")

Poker is unique from any other casino gambling game in that a player's betting influences the outcome of the hand. Players play against one another to win a central pot. As the gamblers take turns betting, the pot grows in size. One bet often influences how another player will play his or her hand.

A player is given three options when it is their turn-bet, check, or fold. BET: A player may place a bet, call, or raise the bet if one already exists. CHECK: If no bet exists a player may "check," which means he does not bet and the turn simply moves on to the next player. FOLD: If a bet does exist and a player does not wish to call, he may forfeit or "fold" his hand. Thus, poker players may use different betting strategy based on the strength of their hand.
